Boosting Your Metabolism for Optimum Weight Loss

Okay, so you want to lose some weight. While researching online you probably stumbled upon the word "metabolism" and read about how crucial it is to your overall body weight. Metabolism is the biochemical process that occurs within any living organism to maintain life. Simply put, it is the rate that you body burns calories and regulates digestion.

Metabolism and Body Weight

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not always that thin people have a higher metabolism rate than overweight people. Your metabolism determines how many calories you burn, including your basal metabolic rate, which you have no control over unless you exercise. Your basal metabolic rate, or BMR for short, is the amount of calories/energy your body uses to perform vital functions such as breathing and digesting food. After your BMR, there are other factors to consider which influence your overall metabolic rate, these are:

  • Age
  • Body Size
  • Medical Conditions such as hormonal issues
  • Diet and Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Sleep

The first sign of a sluggish metabolism is gaining weight easily and then having the inability to lose it. Don't worry though, we're here to help you out!

Here are the best ways to boost your metabolism!

Boost Metabolism With Foods

According to the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), we need about 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight. The following protein-rich foods are bound to kick your metabolism rate up a notch and provide you with a variety of other benefits.

  • Avocado – Contains 2g of protein content in half an avocado, Omega3 fatty acids, and 9 essential amino acids.
  • Fish and Shellfish – Tuna, Salmon, halibut, and shellfish are a must meal. They contain over 28g of protein per 4 ounces.
  • Pseudograins – Quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth are amazing hearty grains that contain 9g of protein per cup.
  • Whey Protein – Contain 24g per ounce. Try soy protein powder.
  • Eat thermogenic rich foods such as hot peppers and black pepper.
  • Drink green tea and coffee. The flavonoids and caffeine in both respectively, aid metabolism and fat burning in the body.

Boost Metabolism Through Exercise

You can boost your metabolism by working out. You can choose whichever type of training you prefer, but just make sure to commit to it and get active at least once per day. We recommend incorporating strength training alongside some high intensity interval training (HIIT) to get the best of both worlds by letting you build dense and strong muscle along with improving your cardio and burning fat.

Metabolism Boosting Supplements

We all know that exercising is not easy and for some it’s even harder to commit to a healthy diet. Because of this, you may want to consider taking dietary supplements that boost metabolisms such as Iron, caffeine, Coenzyme Q10, and vitamin B Complex. These should be your last resort and by no means should you rely on them. Make sure you have everything else covered and then if you feel as if you need an aid look into them. Remember, always seek professional advice before taking any supplement.

Boost Metabolism by Sleeping

The rule of thumb is to eat small, frequent meals throughout the day and to not go to bed hungry as the body goes into starvation mode by lowering your metabolism to conserve calories, a process known as catabolism!

Nuts or any other source of protein is a good choice before bed since it will keep your metabolism running all night and prevent your body from eating away its own muscle.

So there you have it! Now you understand the importance that your metabolism plays into your weight loss goals and you know a couple of ways to speed it up! Implement the tips we gave you and make sure to read our other metabolism related article in our health blog to learn a couple of quick daily tricks that you can implement in order to boost your metabolism!

Have a great day,
