5 Ways to Stay on Track with your fitness goals - Fit Freak

The holidays are known as the best time of the year, and for good reason! It's the time of the year in which you meet up with your family and enjoy each others company. Everyone loves that, but do you know the other thing everyone also loves about the holidays? The FOOD!

The holidays are great and all, but if you're not careful you could get backtracked and lose a lot of the hard earned gains you made throughout the year. The good news, however, is that there is a way to balance it all out. Yes, you can balance food and fitness during this time.

Here we give you the 5 best ways to stay on track with your fitness goals during the holidays while still being able to enjoy the company of your friends and family.

1. Eat a small meal before heading out!

Try to eat a small protein bar or a healthy snack to fill up before heading out. The issue with the holidays isn't usually the type of food, but the amount you eat. Yes, there's usually nothing truly healthy, but if you can limit how much of it you actually eat then you'll be just fine. There are tons of great snacking options you can go with or just stick the a low sugar protein bar to keep you full.

2. Drink a lot of water!

Water, water, water! It's so important to pretty much everything! Drinking a lot of water will help you to stay full and it'll allow your digestion to work more effectively. High water consumption will also speed up your metabolism, which is vital during this time of year. Try not to drink any sugary drinks during the family lunch or dinner and instead opt for a cold glass of water with your meal.

3. Stay Active!

Just because it's the holidays doesn't mean you should take two weeks off any physical activity. I'm not saying you should live in the gym, but try to squeeze in a quick 1 hour workout at least three times a week. When you workout, try to keep the intensity high and get a sweat going. This will allow you to feel less bloated and it'll help you to lose a lot of the water weight you are currently holding due to the high sodium foods you're consuming.

4. Get adequate sleep!

Sleep during the holidays is extremely important considering the high amounts of food you're eating. Sleeping too little will have a catastrophic effect on your metabolism, which is the opposite of what you want right now. Make sure you get a good amount of sleep and rest up!

5. Limit the drinks!

Did you know that alcohol has 9 calories per gram when compared to the 4 calories per gram in protein and carbohydrates? Most people don't. Keep the alcoholic beverages to a minimum and opt to drink water instead. That's not to say that you can't have a drink with your family and friends, but just be thoughtful and remember the high caloric content that each of those drinks contain.
